New York Coin Magic Seminar Interview with Michael Rubinstein
I had the opportunity to chat with Michael Rubinstein regarding the latest Coin Magic Seminar and the release of Volumes 14,15 and 16.
What prompted the theme of methods, performances and presentations for the last seminar?
We felt this was a good topic to focus on, as many magicians seem to lack presentation skills, especially with coin magic. The three, Methods, Performance, and Presentations, seem to fit together, as a way to focus on performance, and always, using state of the art techniques and new unpublished methods.
Knowing Bob Fitch’s focus on presentation and performance, how did adding him to the line up affect the types of effects presented?
Bob is the quintessential performer, and we felt his input was invaluable for this seminar. We had hoped to use him at some point, and this was the perfect place. It didn’t effect our material, but it showcased his thoughts from working in show business for as long as he has.
Do you think coin magicians in particular tend to lack focus in presentation? With the monotony of 3Fly effects and other coin juggling, there seems to be a lack of presentation driven material in coin magic.
There is nothing wrong with play by play magic, we all do it, but presentation is so overlooked, it just makes your magic better. I try to personalize my magic, which makes it more interesting because my audience can identify with it.
How do you go about selecting material and performers for the DVD series?
The material is for the most part based on the topic. We decide on guests based on the topic, and who is available. Our guests have participated more as an honor to be included rather than a paying gig.
Out of the 3 DVDs in this current release, which is your favorite coin effect and why?
My favorite effect in this series (and there are a lot of good ones!!!) is Voodoo Revelation, as it is very unique and very powerful. I actually use this as my closer, and have modified the method to use only two decks, so I can use it anywhere without the setup.
For someone new to the series, where should they start? Volume 1 or Volume 14-15-16?
I always say, start from the beginning for the full enrichment. however, you won’t go wrong starting with any of the DVDs
When is the next seminar planned?
There are no current plans for the next seminar. After 8 seminars, and 16 volumes with over 35 hours of non stop hard hitting no filler coin magic, we have no problem taking a little break. But hey, ya never know….
